Now that winter has passed it’s time to pack up your felt cowboy hat and store it. You want to keep your felt hat in the best shape possible, we get it! Here are some tips and tricks to keep your felts in great condition until next winter.
One of the most important things to keep in mind when storing your hat is that you want to store it in a cool, dry place. You don’t want to leave your hat anywhere it might get too hot, like an enclosed car or next to a heater or stove. If the hat is exposed to humidity combined with heat that could cause extra damage to the hat.
Don’t set your hat down on its brim! Setting it on its brim could cause the brim of the hat to flatten out and lose its shape. Instead, when your set your hat down, turn it upside down and set it on its crown. If the sweatband on the inside of the hat is wet/damp from either rain, sweat, or snow (we live in Texas, it’s okay to admit your forehead gets a little sweaty don’t worry) turn the sweatband up until it’s dry. This will allow the sweatband to air out and dry instead of soaking into your hat. Stay away from using heat to speed up the drying process, we want your hat to keep its shape!
If you don’t want to leave your hat sitting out at night you can always place it on a hat rack where it can hang safely. Just remember to not leave your hat sitting on your bed! It won’t hurt the hat or the bed but you don’t want to risk the extra years of bad luck that come with the superstition.
If you want to clean of your hat, dust it off with a hat brush, a sponge, or a clean damp rag while the hat is dry. Start by dusting on the front left side of the hat and work your way around it counter-clockwise. If you have any persistent lint or hair that won’t come off, we recommend getting a piece of tape and using the sticky side to pick up anything left behind.
