Why Helmet Safety Matters
Safety is the top priority in any sport. This becomes increasingly important in high-speed and potentially dangerous activities such as barrel racing, bull riding, and even the occasional trail ride. When it comes to high-risk activities, safety is of the utmost importance. That’s why here at South Texas Tack, we offer a wide selection of helmets specifically designed to protect you and your little one from potential harm.

The Unpredictability of Riding
The love of the sport comes with one major downfall: unpredictability. Spooking, bolting, and bucking are just a few of the many causes of equestrian-related injuries such as concussions. By taking the extra precaution of wearing a helmet, you can minimize risk. Whether you're shopping for your children or need some extra protection for a particularly ornery foal, we’ve got a helmet fit for you.

What Does ASTM Certified Mean?
All of our helmets are ASTM certified. ASTM stands for the American Society for Testing and Materials, a respected set of standards created for a number of different sports equipment such as cycling, skiing, and of course, horseback riding. According to the American Medical Equestrian Association, ASTM-certified helmets can significantly reduce the risk of severe head injuries by 50%. With this being said, the helmets we carry perform up to standard every time so you can ride with peace of mind.
When Should You Replace Your Helmet?
With safety in mind, it's important to know the lifespan of your helmet. Prompting the question: When should you replace your helmet?
Riding helmets are designed to protect you from one impact event. Impact events are when the helmet comes into contact with any hard surface such as the ground, a concrete barrier, a fence post, or even a horse’s hind hooves striking the rider. If you happen to impact your helmet in any way, it's time to replace it.
Wear, Tear, and Material Breakdown
Another reason for replacement is wear and tear. The more you wear your helmet, the more damage it undergoes. The material that makes up a helmet begins to break down after 3 to 5 years of use. From glue breaking down from heat, sun damage, dents, cracks, and chips, it's important to pay attention to signs of material deterioration so that you can stay safe. We recommend replacing your helmet every 3 to 5 years of use to ensure your protection.
